Schapannro Kennels.......is a small
Ontario kennel devoted to the Schapendoes breed.
The
Schapendoes, or Dutch Sheepdog, is a lightly built, lively dog.
Although there are only a few Schapendoes still actively working
with flocks of sheep, the breed does not deny its sheepherding
origin.
The
Schapendoes belongs to the wide- ranging group of long haired
herding breeds which have densely coated heads. He is related to
the Bearded Collie, the Puli, the Owczarek Nizinny (Polish
Lowland Sheepdog), the Bobtail, the Briard, the Bergamasco, and
the German Schafpudil. All these similar dogs are smaller
mutations of mountain dogs.
Although
dogs have always been a love of my life, I didn’t get my first
dog until 1995 in the form of a bouncy and impetuous female
Wheaten Terrier. Through her I discovered the wonderful world
of dog training and sports. She gave me my first obedience and
agility titles, enabled me to get involved in teaching puppy
classes, and introduced me to a whole new circle of wonderful
friends. In spring of 2001 at a routine vet visit we discovered
that Molly had protein wasting disease. One year later after
numerous diet changes and what treatment we could provide, we
made the heart wrenching decision to end her much-too-short but
very full life. When Molly was diagnosed with protein wasting,
her breeder offered me an older puppy to foster so Emma our
second Wheaten Terrier arrived in the summer of 2001. She was
very respectful of Molly – never pestering her to play and when
the decision was made to euthanize Molly I was very grateful for
her constant and loving presence.
Molly’s
early demise however sent me looking for a new dog, both to
breed (a lifelong desire) and to train for competition
(obedience, agility, rally…). I came across some pictures and
information about the Schapendoes on the internet (a lot of it
in foreign languages). I was intrigued. A little more searching
and I found a number of breeders scattered in the province of
Quebec. A short holiday and several visits with the Schapendoes
in Quebec and I was hooked. Tayana de la Bergerie (Taya to her
friends) came to me in November of 2002, an adorable bundle of
black and grey that immediately stole my heart. She is a joy to
train and trial, an honest dog that always tries her best (to
learn more about all her accomplishments please go to
OUR DOGS).

In July
2006, she was joined by another female Schapendoes, Rowena FL du
Bouleau Blanc (Ro to her friends), a mischievous little rascal
that is maturing into a delightful, happy and engaging young
adult.
Our dogs
are competitive show dogs but more importantly they are an
integral part of our family. Our goals for our Schapendoes are
to raise healthy, beautiful and sound dogs that represent the
qualities and characteristics of the breed that make them the
wonderful dogs that they are. Our breeding choices are made to
produce a good, honest dog with a steady temperament, good work
ethic and a structurally correct and athletic body. We want
dogs that will be gentle with children and other animals and
good canine citizens for the community.
